Hot take: If you're still writing "Intro, 3 Body Paragraphs, Conclusion" in college, you're getting Bs instead of As.
That formula is training wheels. Real academic writing is messy. Sometimes your second body paragraph needs to be a half-page counterargument that disproves your first point before you rebuild it.

The best advice I ever got was: "Treat writing as thinking on paper." Don't force your argument into a mold; let the structure serve the argument .

The five-paragraph essay teaches students that arguments are simple and that complexity is bad. But the real world? Complexity is EVERYTHING. The best papers I've written are the ones where I spent three pages complicating my own argument before I even got to my main point.

My writing improved dramatically when I stopped asking "what are my three points?" and started asking "what do I actually think about this?" and "why might someone disagree with me?" That second question is where the real thinking happens.
