Staring at a blank doc for 3 hours... Is writer's block real or am I just lazy?

I have this 5-page essay on the symbolism in The Great Gatsby due on Friday. It's Tuesday night, and I have literally written my name and the title. That's it. My brain is just... foggy? 🥴 I've tried making coffee, I tried that "write anything even if it's bad" advice, but all I wrote was "The green light means go, but Gatsby didn't go." Like, what even is that?! 😂

Is this normal? Do you guys actually sit down and just write? I feel like I'm the only one who can't just turn thoughts into sentences. I keep getting distracted by my phone, then I feel guilty, then I stare at the wall for 20 minutes. It's a vicious cycle. 🔄

I guess I'm just looking for some solidarity here. Or if anyone has a secret ritual to break this mental block, please share it! I'm desperate. I've heard of people using those "blur method" sites to force focus, but idk if that actually helps. Should I just pull an all-nighter and hope for the best? My brain feels like it's full of static. Help a struggling freshman out!
