My professor showed me an essay that changed how I write. It was about someone's grandma.

I used to think academic essays had to be boring. Like, professionally boring. No personality, no emotion, just facts and citations and that dry, distant voice that makes you want to nap.

Then my professor did something mean. She gave us an example essay and said "read this and tell me what's wrong with it." I read it. Nothing was wrong. It was beautiful. It was about someone's grandmother teaching them to cook, and through that, about cultural identity and assimilation and belonging. It had recipes in it. Recipes! In an academic essay! 😱

I raised my hand and said "I don't get it. What's the problem?" She smiled this evil little smile and said "There's no problem. I just wanted you to see what's possible."

That essay broke my brain. In a good way.

The writer used personal stories as evidence. Not instead of research, but alongside it. She'd quote a scholar about immigrant experience, then immediately follow with "my grandmother never read this scholar, but she lived this truth every time she made tortillas in a kitchen that wasn't hers."

She used sensory details that made you FEEL things. The smell of cumin. The sound of her grandmother's hands slapping dough. The heat of the stove in a small apartment.

She had a voice. Not a generic academic robot voice. HERS. Funny sometimes. Sad sometimes. Angry sometimes. Real.

I asked my professor for the citation. Read everything that writer ever published. Started experimenting with my own voice in my own essays.

Last semester, I wrote a paper about food deserts in my hometown. I included a memory of my abuela walking 40 minutes to the nearest grocery store because she didn't have a car. My professor wrote in the margin: "This is the paragraph where your argument comes alive. Do more of this."

So I'm telling you: find examples that move you. Not just "good" examples. Examples that make you feel something.
