Okay, I need to settle something once and for all! Since middle school, I've had the five-paragraph essay structure drilled into my brain: introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion. It's like my comfort zone. But now I'm in college, and my professor said my last essay felt "too formulaic." Ouch!
So now I'm confused. How many paragraphs are in an essay supposed to be at the university level? Is five still okay, or should I be stretching out? Sometimes I have more than three main points, but I worry about breaking the "rules." I've noticed that academic articles I read for class rarely follow the five-paragraph model. They have really short paragraphs, really long ones, sometimes a one-sentence paragraph for emphasis! It feels so freeing but also terrifying. For those of you who've broken out of the five-paragraph mindset – how did you do it? Did your grades improve? I want my writing to feel more natural and less like I'm just filling a template. Any advice would be amazing!
