I transferred to university last year after two years at community college. The adjustment was brutal. My first few essays came back with comments like "good ideas but..." and "needs more depth." I was used to getting A's. Suddenly I was fighting for B's.
After a lot of trial and error (and some tears), I figured out what I was doing wrong. Here are my best tips for anyone struggling with essays.
Start before you're ready. I used to wait until I had a perfect outline before writing a word. Now I start writing as soon as I have a vague direction. The first draft is always terrible. That's fine. You can't fix a blank page.
The thesis is everything. Your entire essay exists to prove one thing. If your thesis is weak or vague, your essay will be too. Spend real time on it. Write ten versions if you have to. The rest of the paper is just support.
Use the reverse outline. After you write a draft, outline what you actually wrote. Not what you planned to write. This shows you where you went off track. It's embarrassing how often my structure made sense in my head but not on paper.
Cite as you go. Nothing is worse than finding a perfect quote at 2 AM and forgetting to save the source. I use Zotero now. It's free and saves my life every semester.
Read your essay out loud. Your ears catch things your eyes miss. Awkward sentences. Run-ons. Missing words. I do this in my room with the door closed so my roommate doesn't think I'm crazy.
Ask for help early. I used to wait until I was desperate before visiting the writing center. Now I go with every draft. The tutors aren't judging you. They're literally there to help.
