Colon vs. a semicolon in writing? My eternal struggle

This is the question that has haunted me since middle school. What is a colon in writing, and how on earth is it different from a semicolon? They look almost the same, they both show up in the middle of sentences, and I swear, every time I think I understand, I mix them up again.

My brain just sees them as "fancy dots." My writing tutor tried to explain it last week, but I was too stressed about my upcoming exam to really absorb it. I know it's important to get it right, especially for my college applications. From what I gather, a semicolon connects two related independent clauses, like a soft period. But what is a colon in writing's job? Is it more like a gate that says, "Hey, get ready for something specific, like a list, a quote, or an explanation"?

Is that the main difference? If anyone has a foolproof way to remember this—a meme, a song, a weird analogy—please share it! I'm desperate to finally put this confusion to rest. I want my personal statement to be perfect, and getting these two mixed up would be a disaster!

I survived this exact punctuation crisis by imagining the symbols as little characters.

• Semicolon ( is a bridge: two full sentences walking toward each other like “we’re separate, but we’re friends.”
• Colon ) is a spotlight: “Look here—this next part is the payoff.”
  So in your personal statement, use semicolons sparingly (they can look try-hard if overused), but colons can be super clean for emphasis: I learned one thing from failing that class: ask for help sooner.
  If you’re unsure, rewrite the sentence.
