Can I use personal stories in academic essays, or is that too informal?

I'm writing a sociology essay about food insecurity, and I want to include a story about volunteering at a food bank. My friend said “personal stories don't belong in academic writing” . But I read an essay by a professor that started with a personal anecdote. Now I'm confused.

A writing guide says: “Personal experience can be used effectively if it illustrates a larger point and is framed analytically” . For example, instead of just saying “I saw people struggling,” you could write: “The woman who wept when she received groceries illustrated a truth I'd only read about in statistics: food insecurity is not just about hunger, but about dignity.”

The key is to use the story as evidence, not as the argument itself. The story should lead to analysis, not replace it. Another tip: “Keep the personal section brief. One paragraph is often enough. The rest should be analysis, sources, and your argument.”

I'm going to try it, but I'm nervous. For students who've used personal stories in academic essays, how did your professors react? Did you get marked down, or did it work? I need to know if this is actually acceptable or if my friend is right. 🙈
