My first draft had "said" on every page. My writing group told me to mix it up, so I went hunting for dialogue synonyms.
I found lists with hundreds of options: whispered, shouted, murmured, muttered, exclaimed, replied, responded, answered. But I quickly learned that word choice matters. "He exclaimed" feels different from "he muttered." The synonym you pick shapes how readers hear the line.
I also learned that sometimes "said" is actually the best choice . It fades into the background and lets the dialogue shine. The key is variety, not elimination.
Now I use dialogue synonyms intentionally. A whisper here, a shout there. My characters sound more real and my writing feels more professional. If your dialogue feels flat, try varying those tags!

I used to spend hours hunting for synonyms because I thought "said" was boring. Then I read somewhere that overusing fancy tags actually distracts readers. Now I use "said" for most dialogue and save the synonyms for moments where the delivery really matters – a whispered confession, a shouted accusation, a muttered complaint.

The example about "exclaimed" vs "muttered" is perfect. Those words carry emotional weight that "said" doesn't. Using them sparingly makes them hit harder.
