Sophomore year. Had to write a persuasive essay for composition class. Could pick anything. I was paralyzed. Too many choices.
Then my roommate left his dirty dishes in the sink for the fourth day in a row. And I got MAD. Like, unreasonably mad. And I thought: wait. Why am I this angry about dishes? What's really going on?
I wrote my essay about shared living spaces in college dorms. About the unspoken rules nobody teaches you. About how "just talk to your roommate" doesn't work when you were raised with completely different ideas about cleanliness and consideration. About the class dimensions of it (his parents had a housekeeper, mine worked double shifts and came home to clean).
It was the best essay I'd ever written. Because I actually cared. Because I was genuinely confused and angry and trying to understand.
My tip: pick something that actually bothers you. Something that keeps you up at night. Something you argue about with friends. Academic writing doesn't have to be about "important" topics. It has to be about topics that matter TO YOU.
