I have a problem. Every time I write an essay, my transitions are the same. "First, X." "Second, Y." "Third, Z." "In conclusion, everything." It's like my brain can't think of any other way to move from one paragraph to the next.
I read essays where transitions feel natural — almost invisible. The writer just... moves to the next idea. No "furthermore." No "additionally." Just a smooth continuation.
How do people do this?
I asked my writing tutor. She said: "Instead of using transition words, use transition ideas. The last sentence of your paragraph should point toward the next paragraph." She gave me an example: If paragraph one is about social media's benefits, end with "But these benefits come with hidden costs" — then paragraph two is about the costs.
That makes sense. But it's hard to execute. My brain wants to list things. A, B, C. Done.
Does anyone have exercises for this? Ways to practice smoother transitions? I'm tired of sounding like a robot. "First... second... third..."
