Beyond "said": My favorite writing synonyms for dialogue

My first draft had "said" on every page. My writing group told me to mix it up, so I went hunting for dialogue synonyms.
I found lists with hundreds of options: whispered, shouted, murmured, muttered, exclaimed, replied, responded, answered. But I quickly learned that word choice matters. "He exclaimed" feels different from "he muttered." The synonym you pick shapes how readers hear the line.
I also learned that sometimes "said" is actually the best choice . It fades into the background and lets the dialogue shine. The key is variety, not elimination.
Now I use dialogue synonyms intentionally. A whisper here, a shout there. My characters sound more real and my writing feels more professional. If your dialogue feels flat, try varying those tags!
