My professor said my essay is "technically correct but boring." Ouch. 😬

I thought correct was the goal. I used proper grammar. I followed the structure. I cited everything. I got a B and a note that said: "You've mastered the rules. Now find your voice." I don't know what that means.

A friend told me to write like I'm explaining something to a friend. I tried. It felt too casual. Another friend said to add more of my own thoughts, not just summaries of sources. I tried that too. It felt like I was making things up.

How do you sound like yourself without sounding unprofessional? Is there a middle ground? I'm tired of getting B's on papers that are "fine" but not memorable.

Wait, hold on. You're trying to "sound like yourself" while also sounding "professional". That's a trap. Yourself is messy. Professional is clean. The middle ground is clarity. Imagine you're explaining your topic to someone who's curious but knows nothing. You wouldn't mumble citations at them. You'd say "look, here's the weird thing..." Try that. Then add your citations after. Backwards method but it works. 🤷‍♂️
