I got a paper back last week with a decent grade, but also a bunch of comments about my "unique" punctuation style (aka, I don't know how to use semicolons). I was a little embarrassed, but at the end of her feedback, my professor actually wrote a little note: "Consider running your next draft through a free grammar checker before submitting. It's a great tool that professional writers use too!"

It wasn't a criticism, it was just a helpful tip. It made me feel so much better, like she wasn't judging me for my mistakes, she just wanted to help me fix them. It felt like she was on my team. I immediately started using one, and my last paper got way fewer grammar-related comments. Shout out to professors who give practical advice instead of just docking points!

YES! I had a professor last year who did something similar. I kept making the same comma splice errors, and instead of just taking points off every time, she linked a free online tutorial in her feedback. It took her maybe an extra thirty seconds, but it changed how I write forever. Those little moments of actual mentorship make such a difference. It's easy to forget that professors were once struggling students too. The good ones remember what it felt like and pay it forward. Happy for you, Nigel!
